I was at the Michigan race when he got his first win after the comeback. Hardly a dry eye in our section of seats

Sounds Horrible, 10% Chance of Living?Most Drivers would retire after something like that, and the eye patrch reminfs me of Rudd winning a week after that horrible crash used duct tape to keep his eye open and won (I got it from nicorette comer. as I was not born when that happened)

On August 20, 1994, Irvan blew a tire during a practice run at Michigan. The car turned dead right and slammed almost head-on into the Turn 2 wall. There is no replay (this was back in the day when NASCAR still wasn't "cool" and practice sessions weren't televised), and no stills of the accident happening as far as I know. He went to a hospital in Ann Arbor Michigan where he suffered a collapsed lung and severe head injuries. He was given a 10% chance of living through the night. But he did. A few weeks after the crash Irvan pulled out of his coma and began a long road to recovery that led to his being cleared to race at Wilkesboro in the fall of 1995. Due to his head injury he still had eye trouble, so he wore an eyepatch over his left eye, but still finished better than 31 other drivers, finishing his comeback race 6th. He drove in 2 more races in 95, driving the 88, finishing 40th at Phoenix (after starting last and leading 111 laps, he dropped out with a sour motor), and 7th at the finale at Atlanta. In 96, Yates had Irvan back in the 28 and Jarrett to the 88. Oh yeah, nice combo of current sponsor logos on the old-school paint job :-)

Yeah, he blew a tire amd sailed into the wall at Michihan. He had a 10% chance of survival, but he made it through.

i don't know full details but he wrecked pretty bad...all kinds of injuries. somehow he pulled through and Robert Yates put him in a car in 1995. I saw the origional pic of the car on the North Wilkesboro site.
