This setup is based on Bob Stanley’s. He deserves the credit because he did 99% of the work.
Purpose of this setup: consistency, security and tires saving. I modified only 3 points on Bob’s setup. Best lap: 147.9xxx. This can be improved by a good driver. Also, the purpose at the Rock is not to be as fast as possible, but to save tires and be consistent.
One.Gimme a brake. Front Brake Bias: from 70% to 75%. This brake setup is more forgiving. If there’s a crash or anything related to traffic, I can slam on the brakes without spinning. The entry of the pit is also tricky. This tuning improves consistency albeit at the cost of somewhat slower speed.
Two. Unlash that Horse Power. Diff ratio from 4.133 to 4.214. This allows more acceleration. Red light flashes just before turn 1 and 3. Incidentally, this is the setup Bob uses for the Qualifying setup (I discovered this later). Oils goes to 230 degrees, but then oil temperature goes down to 220 as tires wear off (you have to be lighter with the throttle when the tires are tired). Admittedly, 220 is probably too much for very long races (more than 50% length). But for 30 to 50% it’s OK. Fuel get of course burnt quicker, but it’s not an issue either because tires have to be changed before tank is empty. One last note: to recover from a spin, I generally turn left and brake. Simultaneously I go back into 3d gear to re-accelerate. More diff ratio helps gaining time.
Three: looser is no loser. LF Caster from 4 to 3. Gives some Caster stagger, helping the car to turn. Front bias from 50.6% to 50.3% makes the car looser. This helps to compensate for the change in front brake bias. It’s important to turn well in turn 2 and 4.
Pitting strategy: pitting window is between 60 and 70 laps. Change 4 tires. Don’t repair because aerodynamics is not an issue. Add half tank. Should be enough for the life duration of the tires.
